Building a deck in your backyard is a great way to spend more time outside, increase your home’s value, and enhance your property’s appearance. It gives you a place to entertain guests, hang out with friends and family, play with your kids or pets, and get some peace and quiet too. Before your deck is built, however, you need to make a crucial decision: What material will you use?

Composite decks are decks made from composite materials made to look like wood, but they have several advantages over wood decks. Whether composite decking is better than wood decking is a matter of opinion and your priorities, but the following are a few reasons why many people choose composite decks:
- They resist moisture – While wood is porous, composite decking is not, and that means you don’t need to worry about moisture penetrating it and causing rot.
- They resist pests – Wood decks can be vulnerable to wood-destroying pests like termites, carpenter ants, and certain species of beetles, but composite decks do not have this problem. Although composite decks contain some wood fibers, they don’t have the cellulose that these pests need.
- They don’t need staining or painting – Wood decks need to be stained or painted to protect against moisture, UV rays, pests, mold, and other threats, but composite decks don’t need staining or painting because modern capped composite decks have a protective PVC shell already.
